Thrilled beyond belief with the thought of spending a few days hiking Mount Kilimanjaro? Always wanted to go but somehow never found the time—until now? Here are a few handy things from CapeUnionMart that you need to know before you climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Put them to use and get the best experience out of your trek:

1. The Right Gear Matters
Make sure you pack the right gear. You’ll need to bring along a sturdy fleece jacket. Ever heard of gaiters? You’ll need them once you start walking over the scree since it helps keep the stones and sand from getting inside your shoes. Also, make sure to invest in a good pair of hiking boots. This will matter—a lot. You’ll do plenty of hiking so your boots better be as ready as you are. Other essentials you’ll need to pack: headgear, long johns, waterproof pants and jacket. Remember that when you’re in high altitudes, you might not dry as easily or as quickly. Don’t risk hypothermia. Also, leave any cotton wear at home. They don’t dry at high altitudes. Go for wool instead. For anything else you won’t need after the climb, consider rentals.

2. The Route
Don’t go for the steepest or shortest route if you know you’ll have trouble handling it, physically. Also, if it’s steep, you might find yourself ascending too quickly. Altitude sickness could hit you. Remember that the longer your tour is, the more time you give your body to acclimatize. That reduces the chances of you getting altitude sickness. So consider that when you pick a route. Price also affects your choice, as well as your goals. If you want to go the less scenic route, but also get the one with less foot-traffic, that one might be worth taking.  Just make sure everyone in the group agrees.

3. Acclimatisation Day
When you climb Mount Kilimanjaro, you’re going to go through five climactic zones and hike through rain forest that’ll eventually give way to the dry savannah before finally reaching the summit: snow-capped, cold and with a lot less oxygen. Help your body cope with the temperature and altitude changes by putting in an acclimatization day in your tour. That helps reduce the chances of altitude sickness in your group, ensuring a more fun and enjoyable climb for everyone.
